GSELS-Designated Classes
Faculty who
particpate in the GSELS learning
network designate which classes are GSELS by
registering these classes with Earth Ethics
Institute.
There are Two Designations for GSELS
Classes:
1. GSELS-focused: all course objectives
presented through the
lens of
GSELS criteria.
2. GSELS-related: include a module addressing
GSELS criteria.
GSELS-focused
Classes
These classes,
relatively few in number, will concentrate on
all components of sustainability including its
social, economic, and environmental dimensions,
or examine an issue or topic using
sustainability as a lens. Faculty who teach a
GSELS-focused class agree to promote and
explain how to join the GSELS Learning Community. In the GSELS-focused class,
students will be encouraged (but not required)
to begin or contribute to their electronic
portfolio and learn how to add course work and
syllabi, as well as other accomplishments, to
the portfolio. A GSELS-focused class may
include a civic engagement or service-learning
requirement, which may also be archived in the
portfolio.
GSELS-related
Classes
Almost any existing
class can, with some
small additions, become a GSELS-related class.
These classes might incorporate GSELS principles
as a distinct course component or module or they
might concentrate on a single sustainability
principle or issue. Faculty who teach a
GSLES-related class will also explain and
promote GSELS, how to join the GSELS Learning
Community, encourage students to
create an electronic portfolio and identify help
for them to start it. In GSELS-related classes,
students will be encouraged to add the syllabus
and GSELS related coursework to their portfolio
if they choose to create one.
Fieldwork and GSELS Contract Classes
All field experiences addressing sustainability or Earth Literacy
offered as a college course may be approved by a
GSELS certified faculty as qualifying as either
GSELS-Focused or GSELS-Related (Example: Narrow
Ridge Earth Literacy Field Experience).
Students may also approach GSELS
certified faculty and create a GSELS contract
for a class that is not designated as GSELS-focused
or GSELS-related which will then apply toward
the GSELS designation.
