STEM Institute - Workshop for Community Partners

Workshop for Environmental Sustainability Organizations in the Community –
Environmental Sustainability and Service-Learning
October 27, 2010   - 11:30 am  - 2:30 pm
Miami Dade College - 300 NE 2nd Ave, Room 3208-09 -

Are you understaffed?
Do you need people to help, but always find that volunteers are more work
than they are worth?

We want to know more about your needs so we can help professors develop service-learning projects aimed at serving you and your organization.

Center for Community Involvement (CCI) and Earth Ethics Institute (EEI) at Miami Dade College (MDC) are working to establish a way for you to get good, able, knowledgeable, free help, while offering students from the College an opportunity for hands on experience connected to the work they are doing in their courses.

The STEM Service-Learning Project
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Project’s goal is to create a stronger, more developed relationship between MDC faculty, and organizations in the community, especially those working towards achieving environmental sustainability.  By beginning with community-defined needs, the STEM Service-Learning Project will facilitate the expansion of appropriate STEM service-learning to targeted projects.

We have developed a plan to link faculty and NGOs, non-profit entities, etc., who need knowledgeable student workers to come together to create high-quality ways students can meet your needs while applying what they are learning in the classroom to the real world in a service-learning, civic engagement building, volunteering capacity.

Workshop for Environmental Sustainability Organizations in the Community – October 27, 2010
Environmental Sustainability and Service-Learning

In October we will host a two and one-half hour workshop to discuss how to create quality service learning that will meet your needs as well as explain how to work with the Center for Community Involvement at Miami Dade College.  This workshop provides you with the opportunity to tell us what you need in terms of interns, service-learners, etc. Please identify projects related to STEM disciplines you have wanted to accomplish, but just haven’t had enough help to complete. Craft “job descriptions” for your projects and bring them to the workshop. Estimate the number of hours you think this project will take and we will help you identify the skill level needed to accomplish your project. In addition we will try to identify appropriate faculty to work with you at the STEM Service-Learning Institute in February.  Lunch will be provided.

STEM SERVICE-LEARNING INSTITUTE - Friday, February 11, 2011
Ensuring Enough, for All, Forever--Using Service-Learning in STEM Disciplines to Educate for Sustainable Development and the Triple Bottom Line

In February, there will be an all-day Institute, where someone from your office would attend and meet faculty to collaborate on real world work experiences that would be service-learning for our students.

Faculty from the STEM departments have been targeted for this and the theme will be the “Triple Bottom Line” (People, Place and Profit) – with environmental sustainability as a strong focus.

We hope that you will partner with us on this opportunity to attempt to bring you quality volunteers while students gain invaluable experience and a taste of civic engagement.

To participate, contact Caitlyn Palmby at caitlyn.palmby@mdc.edu or 305-237-3450 by October 6, 2010. Please identify your organization, who will attend, and that individual’s email.

We look forward to hearing from you.
