Sustainable Education: Living Systems Learning

This workshop will compare two ways of viewing the world:  the mechanistic perspective
and the ecological perspective, and briefly explore how each influences systems, including biological, social and educational systems. In addition, global prosperity and the role of education will be discussed.  A short history of education for change will be delivered and both sustainable education, including its beginnings in environmental education, education about sustainability, education for sustainability, and education for sustainable development, as well as global education, based on human rights, will be delivered. First, second and third generation rights will be identified and key components of sustainable education will be reviewed. Finally, participants will engage in a discussion about which educational approaches help students and society address today’s societal inequities and ecological challenges without negatively impacting prosperity.

Objectives

-As a result of this workshop participants will be able to:
-Describe how sustainable education and global education emerged
-Discuss the relationship between sustainable education and global education
-
Identify how paradigms influences systems, including the education system
-Compare and contrast a mechanistic view and an ecological view of education
-Develop a curriculum component related to global sustainability, social equity and prosperity

Evaluation will include completion of workshop and development of a discipline-specific course module or lesson plan addressing global sustainability. The lesson plan is due to the Earth Ethics Institute within three weeks of the workshop and will be posted on the EEI website.
